Study on Complementary Effect of EEM in Treating Advanced Digestive Cancer by Chemotherapy

Objective: To observe the complementary effect of EEM (Water extracts of multiple edible mushrooms) to chemotherapy in treating advanced digestive malignant tumor.
Methods: Forty-six patients with advanced gastric or esophageal carcinoma were divided into the treated group (n=26) and the control group (n=20). Both groups were treated with conventional chemotherapy protocol and agents by administering hydroxy-camptotherin, leucovorin, 5-Fu and cisplatin for 5 successive days in a week for a cycle, 2 cycles making a therapeutic course. To treated group, EEM (each tablet contains 415mg of extracts of edible mushrooms) was given additionally by orally taken, 3/d, 2tab/time. The quality of life in patients, including appetite, body weight and Karnofsky score (KS), changes of immunological index, as well as adverse-effect of chemotherapy were observed.
Results: In the treated group, 2 patients were remitted completely, 8 were remitted partially, the total effective rate was 38.4%, clinical benefit rate 76.9%, 6-month survival rate 84.6% and 1-year survival rate 65.4%, while in the control group, the corresponding numbers were 0, 6, 30%, 75%, 55% and 15%. On the quality of life, stable and improvement of appetite, body weight and KS were better in the treated group than those in the control group. Occurrence of adverse-effect, such as digestive reaction and leucopenia was better in the treated group than in the control group. Immunological indexes showed that CD3 and CD4/CD8 ratio, IgG level, and NK and T-cell activity increased in the treated group after treatment.
Conclusion: EEM in conclusion with phenotherapeutic agent in treating advanced malignant tumor could raise obviously the response rate and survival rate, improve quality of life, reduce the toxic-adverse effects of chemotherapy and elevate immune function in patients, EEM showed definite complementary effects to chemotherapy.
